Chicago Heights didn’t have to go far to find its new chief of police.

Cmdr. Charles Guiliani Jr., who has more than 25 years of service with the city police department, was named chief at the city council meeting Monday night, city attorney TJ Somer said Tuesday.

Somer said Chief Michael Camilli, who retired last week, was on hand with his family, and former Chief Anthony Murphy also attended the meeting.

As commander, Guiliani oversaw many of the day-to-day operations of the department. He was responsible for the patrol, detective and juvenile affairs divisions as well as the traffic, crime prevention and community policing units.

With his years of service in Chicago Heights and his familiarity with the city and department, Guiliani “brings a lot of continuity” to the job of chief, Somer said.
