SD 135 hopes to have supt. by December

Embarking on a search for a superintendent for the second time this year, Orland School District 135 officials have set a timetable that calls for hiring someone before the end of the year.

The school board has set a Sept. 28 deadline for applications to be submitted, and the board will interview candidates in late October, according to a timetable released by District 135 last week. The superintendent would start July 1.

In April, board members could not reach a consensus on a superintendent candidate after a search that relied on assistance from the Illinois Association of School Boards. It was not clear whether the IASB will be hired to help with the new search.

Paul Howell, who had been the district’s curriculum director, took over as superintendent in July 2010 following the retirement of Dennis Soustek, who had served as superintendent since 2006. In January, Howell moved back to his curriculum post, and Soustek was brought back to serve as interim superintendent.

Last month, the board approved hiring Carol Kunst as interim superintendent. Kunst, who was superintendent of Burbank School District 111, was one of the applicants for the permanent job in District 135 and hopes to be considered as part of the latest search effort.
