Blue Island station included in RTA information-upgrade plans

Installing real-time signs at Pace shelters to indicate when the next bus is arriving, and improving signage to direct commuters to the various transit options at the Blue Island Vermont Street Metra station are among the projects approved by the Regional Transportation Authority Board as part of a $16 million program, the RTA said Wednesday in a news release.
A total of six projects were approved, designed to make commuting easier, the RTA said.
In Blue Island, new signs at multiple locations would help direct commuters who use the four Pace bus routes, one CTA bus route, and three Metra lines or branches that stop at or near the station. The signs are expected to be installed beginning late this year or in early 2013.
The CTA also will upgrade paging at its rail stations, with announcements displayed on its Train Tracker signs so hearing-impaired riders can get information.
Meanwhile, Metra staff are exploring new fare systems and technologies. Most of the projects are to begin by early 2013.
