The owner of a Crestwood gas station is accused of defrauding the state of more than $324,000 in gasoline sales tax revenue, according to an indictment announced Thursday by Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan and the Illinois Department of Revenue.
The indictment charges Sultan Gilani, 61, of Chicago, with four counts of sales tax fraud and four counts of mail fraud, Madigan’s office said. From 2009 to 2011, Gilani underreported revenues at his station, Synergy Oil Corp., 13830 S. Pulaski Road, according to the attorney general.
Madigan said that a new law enacted this summer established stronger penalties and eliminated barriers to prosecute Illinois businesses that evade sales taxes.
