A 40-year-old northwest Indiana man was killed Thursday when the motorcycle he was riding struck a tree in Orland Park.
The crash happened about 6:20 p.m. at Wheeler Drive and Lowe’s Avenue in Orland Park, according to police and the Will County coroner’s office.
A preliminary investigation by Orland Park police found that John D. Nassenstein was operating his 2005 Honda motorcycle at a high rate of speed eastbound on Wheeler Drive when the bike left the roadway and struck a tree.
Nassenstein was thrown off and was found on the sidewalk, police said.
Nassenstein, of Schererville, Ind., was taken to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox, where he was pronounced dead at 7:14 p.m. Thursday, according to the coroner’s office.
Witnesses told police that just prior to the crash, they heard Nassenstein arguing with someone near the LongHorn Steakhouse parking lot, and Nassenstein then sped off on the motorcycle.
Police do not yet know whom he was arguing with, and there is no indication that any other vehicle was involved in the crash.
Police are asking anyone with information to call (708) 349-4111.
The crash remained under investigation Friday morning. Police said there was no indication that alcohol was a factor, though the coroner’s office is conducting toxicology tests.
