Riverdale police shot and killed a man who allegedly pointed a gun at them Friday evening.

Steven L. Watson, 40, was fatally shot in the 13900 block of South Edbrooke Avenue in Riverdale, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Officers responded about 6:25 p.m. on reports that someone was firing a gun in the area, and allegedly saw Watson enter an apartment building, Riverdale police said in a release.

Officers chased him inside and confronted him, ordering him to drop the handgun he was holding, the release said.

Police fired “in fear for their life” after he allegedly turned his weapon toward the officers.

Watson, who lived at a different address in the same block, was pronounced dead at MetroSouth Medical Center in Blue Island at 7:20 p.m., according to the medical examiner’s office.

Illinois State Police and investigators from the Cook County state’s attorney’s office Public Integrity Task Force are investigating the shooting.
