A 71-year-old Homewood man is facing criminal sexual assault charges after allegedly molesting a 10-year-old boy during the course of two years, authorities said.
Hugh T. Copeland, of the 1300 block of Francisco Avenue, was charged Tuesday with criminal sexual assault, according to court records. Cook County Circuit Court Judge Darron E. Bowden set Copeland’s bail at $300,000 during a hearing Wednesday at the Markham courthouse, records show.
The boy was at Copeland’s house in August, playing video games in the basement, when Copeland walked in and fondled him, according to records. Later that night, Copeland tried to sexually assault the boy, according to court records.
Authorities said the boy told a woman that Copeland had been sexually abusing him for two years.
According to court records, Copeland would bite the boy’s lips when the boy told Copeland to stop sexually assaulting him.
Copeland is next due in court Oct. 24 at the Markham courthouse.
