A new $26 million fieldhouse that will create more space for sports teams and extracurricular activities is expected to get approval Tuesday morning from the Homewood-Flossmoor High School District 233 Board.

The board is to vote on the renovation project at a special meeting at 8:30 a.m. in the superintendent’s conference room at the school, 999 Kedzie Ave. in Flossmoor, according to the meeting agenda posted on the district’s website.

Supt. Von Mansfield, business manager Ken Parchem and the board’s finance committee have recommended the project, with Mount Prospect-based Nicholas & Associates as the contractor, according to the agenda.

The renovation to the campus’ North Building will add 100,000 square feet of space for the 35 sports, 75 teams and 90 clubs and activities the school district offers, and make more space available for use by youth sports and the community. It also will offer a new, more accessible main entrance.

School officials previously said site work could begin in November, with the demolition of the existing fieldhouse taking place in the spring.

While the district has renovated parts of the 53-year-old school, the North Building has not been touched in 40 years, school officials said.

The project is expected to be completed in 2014.
