Another year, another state championship for the Marian Catholic High School Marching Band.
The band won its 33rd straight state title in its class Saturday at Hancock Stadium at Illinois State University, according to a news release from the Chicago Heights school.
The band finished first among 45 bands, with the largest point spread in the history of the event, the release said.
“We are very proud of the students and their great accomplishment,” band director Greg Bimm said in the release. “Our students are intelligent, dedicated and hard-working, and they prepared very well for the contest.
“Approaching a major contest like this while knowing there is a 32-year unbeaten streak certainly brings significant pressure. The kids took this in stride and went into the day with a sense of calm confidence,” Bimm said.
Marian Catholic competed in Class 3A and also won the overall state championship.
The next challenge is in two weeks when the band will be among 92 vying for the national championship in Indianapolis.
“We are approaching nationals with an unprecedented 28-year unbroken streak of top-12 appearances that we hope to extend,” Bimm said.
