Obama wins — at least in Alsip classroom

The 2012 presidential race may be too close to call even with Election Day at hand, but that wasn’t the case Monday at Lane Elementary School in Alsip.
President Barack Obama won by a landslide margin in a mock election organized by special-education teacher Kelly Burke and second-grade teacher Conception Rodelo.
Burke said each class was given 15 minutes to vote in a Google document, which she called an “electronic voting machine.” Each student who voted was given an “I voted” sticker, and all the votes were private, Burke said.
A total of 268 students voted. At the end of the day, Principal Patti Egan announced the results on the public-address system: Democratic incumbent Obama won 84 percent of the vote, and Republican challenger Mitt Romney 16 percent.
“It’s important to see the connection at home,” Burke said. “Their parents will be voting tomorrow, and it’s fun for them to learn about citizenship.”
