Tinley Park’s Parade of Lights set for Dec. 2

Tinley Park’s Parade of Lights is returning for a 15th year, but there’s a slight change in this year’s event.
The staging area on Dec. 2 will be at the Tinley Park South Condominiums, 17710 S. Oak Park Ave. Staging starts at 4 p.m. and the parade is at 5 p.m.
In past years, the staging area was two blocks farther south, at Central Middle School, 179th and Oak Park Avenue.
Vicki Sanchez, special events coordinator for the village, said the change was made with youngsters and seniors in mind.
“The parade committee felt that by shortening the route, it would be better for the senior citizens and children walking in the parade. It’s always a pretty cold day,” Sanchez said.
The parade will proceed north on Oak Park Avenue to the community parking lot near Subway, 17217 S. Oak Park Ave., Sanchez said.
As of Wednesday, 15 entries have signed up, she said. The entry fee is $25, but veterans groups, military groups, Scouts, schools and churches can march for free, Sanchez said.
As always, Christmas lights must be included on any float in the parade.
“The whole idea is have the parade lit up,” she said Wednesday.
The parade itself led to some confusion Tuesday night when village board members met for committee meetings.
Several board members thought the parade had been canceled. Others were certain it would go on as planned.
The confusion arose because the village’s website did not list the parade on its upcoming events, assistant village manager Mike Mertens said. The site was updated Wednesday morning to include the parade, he said.
