Meijer plans to build super center in Flossmoor

Updated: December 24, 2012 6:36AM

Plans are under way for Meijer to build a 192,000-square-foot store in Flossmoor.

The proposed store would be near the intersection of Vollmer Road and Crawford Avenue, northeast of a gas station that’s on the corner, and would be a “super center” with groceries, general merchandise and a gas station, Flossmoor planning director Patrick Finn said.

The Flossmoor Plan Commission approved plans for the store on a 4-to-1 vote after a public hearing Nov. 15, Finn said.

“Right now, most of the land is vacant. There’s slightly more than 39 acres, made up of 19 separate parcels,” Finn said.

Three single-family homes on the site would be demolished for the project, he said.

The site is part of the 91-acre Southwest Flossmoor Tax Increment Financing District, making it eligible for tax breaks.

The proposal goes to the village board Dec. 17, Finn said.

At the plan commission hearing, some residents expressed concerns, Finn said.

“They talked about the impact on the neighborhood. There were some concerns about traffic with Crawford being a two-lane roadway. There were also some concerns about noise and light pollution. We’ll be working with Meijer to see if we can take care of everyone’s concerns and mitigate them,” Finn said.

Meijer spokesman Frank Guglielmi said Wednesday the chain has a contract to buy the site, but has not yet.

Meijer wants to “make sure the site is workable” and will “go through all the appropriate approvals at various levels of government,” he said.

Once that is done, “we’ll purchase the property and start building a store. It’s a couple years away before there’s actually a store there,” Guglielmi said.

Flossmoor would be the second location for Meijer in the Southland. Meijer has a store at 15701 S. 71st Court, Orland Park.

Meijer also has two stores in Bolingbrook and one each in Plainfield, Aurora, Merrillville, Ind., and Highland, Ind.
