A 17-year-old from Lockport was arrested Friday and charged with abusing his girlfriend’s 2-month-old daughter.
Jon B. Karlson, of 1128 S. Hamilton St., has been charged with aggravated battery to a child.
The girl’s 18-year-old mother has been dating Karlson for four months, Will County sheriff’s police said. The biological father does not have contact with the girl.
Karlson was watching the child Thursday evening at a residence in the 15500 block of South Gougar Road while the mother was at work, police said.
Karlson reportedly called his girlfriend to say the baby “did not look right” so she left work and came home to take her to the hospital.
Shortly after 7 p.m. Karlson and the baby were in the back seat while the mother was driving near Bruce and Gougar roads when the child stopped breathing and the couple called 911.
A Lockport Township Fire ambulance arrived at the intersection, and firefighters performed CPR and rushed the girl to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox. She was transferred Thursday night to Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago.
According to reports, the child suffered abuse, head trauma and subdural hemorrhaging and is breathing on a ventilator.
Deputy Chief Ken Kaupas said police and DCFS were notified by hospital staff and Karlson was arrested after being interviewed by detectives. He is being held on $250,000 bail.
