After 26 years in public office, Lockport Mayor Dev Trivedi has announced he will not seek re-election in April.

“It was a heart-wrenching decision,” said the mayor, who had been collecting signatures on nominating petitions. “It’s tough for me because I love this city so much.”

Trivedi, who made the announcement Saturday at NuVibe Juice and Java during his monthly “coffee with the mayor,” cited his family as the No. 1 reason for stepping out of public life.

His first grandchild was born 1-1/2 years ago, and Trivedi retired in January from the Illinois State Police lab.

“I want to continue on the retirement path,” he said, adding that his family is “very happy” with his decision.

Trivedi has held elected office for 26 years, including eight years on School District 90 board, 14 years as alderman and four years as mayor.

He will still be involved as a volunteer with the Will County Historical Society and the Gaylord Building, he said.

Ald. Kelly Turner — whom Trivedi defeated by three votes in the 2009 mayoral election — previously announced he would run again for mayor.

Nominating petitions for the April election must be filed between Dec. 17 and 26.
