When the first crop of nursing students starts school this spring at Chamberlain College of Nursing’s new Tinley Park location, the “patients” they’ll work with will be a bit out of the ordinary.
The students will train on computerized mannequins that can simulate vital signs such as heart rate and express discomfort or display “symptoms of a cardiac arrest, a medication error or drug interaction,” Bonnie Saucier, president of the new location, 18624 West Creek Drive, said.
The mannequins are used in the school’s Simcare Center, which also features laboratories that can simulate a hospital intensive care unit, coronary care unit and an obstetrics unit.
Chamberlain is part of DeVry Inc., and space for the nursing school was carved out of DeVry’s Tinley Park campus during a remodeling that was completed last summer. Tinley Park is Chamberlain’s 13th location nationally, and it also has schools in Chicago and Addison.
The new location recently was accredited by The Higher Learning Commission. The summer semester starts May 6.
The company said that demand for nurses is expected to surge as the population ages and legislative changes extend health care coverage to millions of more people.
Still, according to Chamberlain, the Illinois Center for Nursing projects a statewide shortage of more than 21,000 registered nurses by 2020. Saucier said that, nationwide, about half of the registered nurses working in hospitals and other settings are nearing retirement.
She said Chamberlain students who attend school year-round can obtain a bachelor’s degree in three years instead of the typical four. Before joining Chamberlain in May 2012, she was associate vice president for academic affairs and dean of nursing and health sciences at Linfield College in Portland, Ore.
Open houses for interested students will be held at the Tinley Park location from 5 to 7 p.m. March 5 and 7. For information or to register, visit www.chamberlain.edu/events.
