Chicago’s first responders will be the grand marshals of this year’s South Side Irish St. Patrick’s Day Parade on March 10 in the city’s 19th Ward.

A news conference about the parade is to be held at noon Tuesday, fittingly at a park dedicated to two Chicago firefighters who died fighting a fire there 15 years ago.

King-Lockhart Memorial Park, 10615 S. Western Ave., is the site of a tire store fire that claimed the lives of firefighters Patrick King and Anthony Lockhart on Feb. 11, 1998.

In the parade, first responders will be represented by members of the Chicago Fire Department, Chicago Police Department and the Cook County Sheriff’s Office. Recognition also will be given to the families of recent fallen first responders from the Beverly area, Chicago Fire Capt. Herbie Johnson, police officer Michael Flisk and firefighter Walter Patmon.

During Tuesday’s news conference, a piper from the Emerald Society, Chicago Police Department will play as representatives of the police and fire departments and the South Side Irish Parade Committee lay logo-shaped wreaths in honor of all fallen first responders.

In a news release, parade co-chair Joe Connelly said it was a “great honor” to choose first responders as grand marshals.

“Each first responder provides invaluable service to the communities of Chicago, including the communities that come together to host this parade, so it is only fitting that first responders are awarded such an honor,” Connelly said.

The 2013 South Side Irish St. Patrick’s Day Parade is scheduled to start at noon March 10 at 103rd Street and Western Avenue, and head south on Western Avenue.

To offset the increased costs of hosting the annual community parade, the South Side Irish Parade Committee will host a parade fundraiser from 7 p.m. to midnight Friday at 115 Bourbon Street, 3359 W. 115th St., Merrionette Park. Tickets are $30 each and include a dinner buffet, drinks and live entertainment.
