One man was in custody and Burbank police continued to search Wednesday night for two others after the men fled from a car that earlier had crashed into a police vehicle in Chicago, police said.
The incident, which resulted in Burbank schools being put on lockdown during the search, began when Chicago police saw a black Mercedes-Benz being driven erratically near 83rd Street and Ashland Avenue and pulled it over, police said.
When an officer approached the car, which had three males inside, the driver fled and police gave chase. During the pursuit, the vehicle reversed direction and struck a police vehicle, police said. No injures were reported in the crash, police said.
The Mercedes then fled into Burbank, and Chicago officers stopped their pursuit and notified Burbank police, police said.
A short time later, a witness in Burbank reported three people running from a vehicle in the 5700 block of 83rd Place, Burbank police said. They set up a perimeter and arrested one suspect near 87th Street and Central Avenue.
Burbank schools were placed on lockdown as a precaution during the search, which included helicopters, police said. The area was later deemed safe and students were released.
One suspect was turned over to Chicago police and charges were pending, police said.
