Orland Park mailing tax rebate checks

For Orland Park residents who applied for the village’s property tax rebate program, checks are being sent this week.
About 16,600 homeowners submitted applications for the program. Checks for $155.55 are due to go out in the next day or two, Joe La Margo, the village’s public information officer, said Monday.
The rebate is for the 2011 property tax paid to the village in 2012. The village’s share of the average Orland Park resident’s tax bill is about 7 percent.
Initially, village officials thought checks would average about $130, but that was based on the 18,215 residents who filed for the rebate in 2009, the last year the village issued checks. The rebate program was temporarily suspended after the recession reduced village tax revenue substantially.
Orland Park officials earmarked $2.5 million for this year’s rebate program, including costs associated with processing applications.
In 2009, the amount of rebate that each resident received varied, depending on the equalized assessed value of their home, with the average homeowner getting $247, according to the village.
The village began the tax rebate program in March 2003 to offset a new home-rule sales tax it imposed.
