Chicago police shot and killed a motorist in East Hazel Crest Tuesday night, after the man rammed a police vehicle while attempting to flee from undercover investigators, police said.
About 9:45 p.m., several detectives surveilling a residential neighborhood watched a man and a woman climb into a vehicle in the 1900 block of West 171st Street, police said in a statement.
When a detective went to investigate, the man accelerated his vehicle toward an officer at a “high rate of speed” before striking a police vehicle, according to the statement.
One of the officers, “in fear of his life,” opened fire on the vehicle, striking the driver at least once, police said.
After he was shot, the man was able to flee a short distance in the vehicle before police placed him under arrest.
He died a short later at an area hospital, police said. No officers were injured.
Chicago Police declined to elaborate on their statement early Wednesday. East Hazel Crest police could not be reached for comment.
A Fraternal Order of Police spokesman, who usually speaks on behalf of officers involved in shootings, said early Wednesday that he could not immediately comment.
The Independent Police Review Authority, which looks into officer-involved shootings, is investigating the matter.
