Legal video gambling is coming to New Lenox, but only at the VFW and American Legion posts.
The New Lenox Village Board on Monday unanimously approved allowing state-sanctioned gambling for the veterans organizations.
There was no discussion before Monday’s vote, but the issue had been discussed previously, dating back to last spring when Mayor Tim Baldermann said the village wasn’t eager to do business with Springfield.
Baldermann at the time acknowledged that VFW Post 9545, 323 Old Hickory Road; and American Legion Post 1977, 14414 Ford Drive; could benefit from having video gambling. But officials were not aware that the village could approve gambling for specific types of organizations. Baldermann recently spoke to legislators and learned it could.
“Speaking candidly, they are our veterans and fought for our freedoms,” Baldermann said at the March 11 board meeting.
Trustee Annette Bowden was absent Monday night and did not vote.
