An elderly man was struck by a Metra train in the South Chicago neighborhood Wednesday after apparently walking into the path of the train.
The man, believe to be about 70 years old, was struck about 9:30 a.m. at 74th Street and Exchange Avenue, police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli said.
Witnesses told police the man apparently walked in front of the train, Mirabelli said. He was taken in “very critical condition” to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Mirabelli said.
According to Metra, Electric District Train No. 316, scheduled to arrive at the 55th/56th/57th Street station at 9:43 a.m. and downtown Chicago at 10 a.m., was stopped at the South Shore station because of the pedestrian incident.
That train was delayed a total of 59 minutes, according to Metra. No other Metra trains were affected.
