Further tests will be needed to determine the cause of death for a Blue Island man who died Tuesday night while in police custody in Harvey, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
It reported that Jeremy I. Hill, 27, of the 14000 block of Leavitt Avenue, died while he was being held at the police station, 15301 Dixie Highway.
Harvey police took Hill into custody about 6 p.m. Tuesday, but when he was brought into the station’s detention area he “appeared to be having difficulty breathing,” police spokeswoman Sandra Alvarado said in a statement.
An ambulance was called immediately, and Hill was taken while unresponsive to Ingalls Memorial Hospital in Harvey, where he was pronounced dead at 7:20 p.m., authorities said.
An autopsy Wednesday was inconclusive, with results pending further studies, according to the medical examiner’s office.
The incident has been turned over to Illinois State Police for investigation, according to Alvarado, who would provide no further details.
