A Lockport man attacked a sleeping 10-year-old boy and his father with a fireplace shovel early Saturday after a party in Lemont Township, according to Cook County sheriff’s police.
Nathan Hiatt, 29, faces two counts of aggravated battery for striking the boy about 1 a.m. in a home in the 15100 block of 131st Street, police said.
They said the boy’s father, 36, woke up when the boy started screaming and shielded him from further blows as Hiatt struck him also, and Hiatt then ran out the back door.
Police responded to a 911 call and found Hiatt under a nearby tree.
The man and his son were treated and released from an area hospital, according to police.
They said Hiatt, the boy and his father had attended a Friday night party hosted by the homeowner, but the motive for the attack remained unclear.
Bail for Hiatt was set Sunday at $250,000, and he was due in court Tuesday at the Cook County courthouse in Bridgeview, according to police.
