Alsip police said the safety equipment at a train crossing where a 48-year-old man was killed Monday night was working prior to his death.
James P. Augustyn, of the 12300 block of South Kostner Avenue, was walking northbound across train tracks in the 12200 block of South Kostner Avenue when he was struck by a westbound CSX freight train at 9:13 p..m. Monday, police said.
Police said the death does not appear to be a suicide.
A preliminary investigation shows that the crossing and train safety equipment — including horns, bells and lights — were functioning at the time of the incident, police said.
Augustyn was pronounced dead at the scene, though a time of death was not given by the Cook County medical examiner.
CSX officials were not immediately available for comment.
