New containers for household trash will be rolled out, literally, in Orland Park starting next month.
As part of a new 10-year contract approved in June between the village and Waste Management of Illinois, 96-gallon wheeled carts will be supplied by the company to village residents.
Details of how the carts will be distributed are still being worked out, but the plan is to begin deliveries in mid-to-late September, according to Bill Plunkett, a Waste Management spokesman.
Homeowners now use their own containers for household garbage or rent a gray, wheeled cart from Waste Management. Those renting the carts can keep them, but the monthly rental fee will stop Oct. 1.
Refunds will be processed automatically, and residents will get them in November, according to the village.
Information about the new carts and the collection procedure is being mailed to homes. Residents who would prefer a smaller, 64-gallon cart must request one from Waste Management.
The objective of going to uniform trash carts is twofold, according to the village and Waste Management.
Some homeowners put out their household trash in plastic bags, which are easily shredded by animals, leaving a mess. And the new carts will allow Waste Management trucks to empty them with a mechanical arm, enabling the driver to not leave the truck.
The new contract with Waste Management, which takes effect Nov. 1, will increase the frequency of collection for recyclables. As of the week of Nov. 4, recyclables will be picked up weekly instead of every two weeks. Households will continue to use the current blue carts for recyclables.
Orland Park residents also will initially pay a little less under the new contract than they do now for trash collection.
The current monthly charge of $19.40 will dip to $18.58 in the first year of the contract. The price will increase to the current rate by the pact’s third year and then gradually rise to $23.20 per month by the 10th year.
