The new StoryWalk Trail at Sendra Park in Homer Glen will have more stories and a bicycle rack if it can secure funding from the PNC Neighborhood Wishlist Program.
Park users are encouraged to cast their votes at www.PNCNeighborhoodWishlist.com through Sept. 16 to try to earn $500 in funding from the PNC Bank program.
The StoryWalk, which debuted this summer, is a joint effort between the Homer Township Public Library, Homer Township and the Homer Glen Foundation, to promote literacy and physical fitness.
Foundation president Laurel Ward submitted a plan to PNC Bank to add to the trail, and it was selected as a finalist.
If the project receives 500 votes, PNC Bank will award $500 to buy a bike rack and additional books for the StoryWalk Trail.
The StoryWalk Trail is “a wonderful amenity at Sendra Park, but the stories need to be updated to keep children interested in going back and reading more,” Ward said in a press release. “This is a neighborhood park and we’d like to encourage kids to be active and ride their bikes to the park rather than ride in a car.”
The foundation also plans to work with the township to update the physical fitness stations with new exercise equipment at the park.
“I definitely see residents getting more use out of this park when all the improvements are made,” Ward said.
