Tinley Park will hold an informational meeting Tuesday on a planned traffic roundabout at 183rd Street and Oak Park Avenue.
The meeting will be from 5 to 7 p.m. at Central Middle School, 18146 Oak Park Ave., and will feature presentations by the village’s public works and fire departments, as well as information from the police department on how roundabouts improve traffic safety.
Although there are now stoplights at that intersection, they would be replaced with a landscaped circle and reconfigured traffic lanes to route vehicles around it.
The bulk of the $2.86 million project, scheduled to begin construction in summer 2015, is being covered by federal grant money.
Traffic roundabouts are more prevalent in other states, but Illinois has only a few. They are designed to move traffic more efficiently and safely and have been found to substantially reduce accidents that result in death or severe injury, according to Tinley Park Police Chief Steve Neubauer.
For the project, the village has to buy small amounts of property at the southwest and southeast corners of the intersection, which it hopes to do by fall 2014.
