Homer Glen facilitates Jewel-Osco opening

Updated: January 14, 2014 12:27PM

Homer Glen officials this week took action in preparation for the Jan. 16 opening of Jewel-Osco, which will be replacing the Dominick’s supermarket at 14200 Bell Road.

Village trustees on Tuesday night granted the Jewel-Osco a liquor license; approved outdoor sales for the store so it can sell firewood, plants, pumpkins, wreaths and other seasonal items; and issued Jewel-Osco a special use zoning permit to allow it to be open from 5 a.m. to 1 a.m. daily.

Dominick’s owner Safeway announced in October that it plans to close on Dec. 28 all of its 72 Chicago-area stores that it does not sell. Jewel-Osco has bought four of the stores, reportedly with plans to acquire more, and Mariano’s announced last week that it would purchase 11 stores.

Also Tuesday night, trustees indicated they would likely consider an ordinance in January limiting any medical marijuana growing or distribution centers to industrial zoning. Mayor Jim Daley said no one has approached Homer Glen to ask for a business license to sell or grow marijuana, but the village wants to be prepared for such requests.

The Illinois Legislature this year legalized medical marijuana for qualified patients. Under the new law, up to 60 dispensaries and 22 growing centers can be located in the state.

By restricting medical marijuana businesses to industrial areas in the village, Homer Glen will greatly limit where such businesses can operate, Daley said, adding that he doesn’t believe any will be proposed for the village.

The village board also approved a $117,630 contract with Gilberts-based Copenhaver Construction’s to complete stormwater improvement projects next year to improve drainage and reduce mosquito problems.

The projects include regrading the existing lake in Hunt Club Woods to allow proper drainage, replacing a deteriorated outlet pipe in an Old Oak Estates detention pond and reconstructing the detention pond at 151st Street and Parker Road in Pebble Creek.
