Country Club Hills police have a suspect in custody in the murder Sunday of a 42-year-old woman at her home, and charges are pending, the city’s public safety director said Monday night.
Mary Hayden, 4588 W. 179th St., died from a severe blow to her head and was pronounced dead about 8:20 a.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
Public safety director William Brown, who oversees the city’s police and fire departments, declined to identify the suspect or release additional information about the case. Earlier Monday, he described Hayden’s death as an “isolated incident.”
Brown said Hayden had two children, ages 8 and 10, who were home at the time.
Mayor Dwight Welch said Monday afternoon that the killing resulted from a domestic dispute in which Hayden and a relative “had an altercation and the rest is what it is.
“With the family involved, it’s really sad. I feel really bad about it,” Welch said, also declining to identify the relative or provide more details.
Yellow police tape surrounded Hayden’s property Monday afternoon as police activity continued there. A van and a Toyota Camry were parked in the house’s turnaround.
The South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force is assisting Country Club Hills police in the investigation.
