Pantry to provide pet items to families in need

Updated: February 18, 2014 6:32AM

It can be expensive at times to care for a pet, and families with furry ones may wish for an assist on items such as food, treats and leashes.

Well, the Best Buddies Pet Pantry will do just that.

Best Buddies Pet Pantry will be holding its fourth annual pet food drive to benefit family pets in need Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm at Petco, 17930 Halsted St. in Homewood.

Best Buddies Pet Pantry is a non-profit organization that provides free pet food to qualified families in need in Illinois and Northwest Indiana.

The pantry currently helps more than 1,000 families a month and welcomes any volunteers willing to donate any items to help families with pets.

Pet items needed includes any new dog and cat food, dog biscuits and treats, cat treats, new or gently used collars and leashes, plastic shopping bags, and pet food coupons.

Cheryl Plomann, Founder and President of Best Buddies Pet Pantry said the donations received Saturday and Sunday will help families in surrounding neighborhoods.

“Our volunteers will be (at Petco) this weekend accepting donations,” Plomann said. “Any pet food donated will go to help their local community.”
