Snow and slippery roads likely played a role in two-vehicle crash Saturday near Manhattan that left a woman and a teen girl dead and one man injured, police said.

A Dodge four-door car traveling south on U.S. 52 south of Cedar Road lost control about 1:10 p.m. and struck a Ford pickup truck traveling north in the oncoming lane, Illinois State Police Sgt. Scott Angus said.

A 16-year-old girl who was a front-seat passenger in the Dodge was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver — a 20-year-old woman — died at 2:38 p.m. after being taken to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox, authorities said.

The Will County coroner’s office said they both were Joliet residents, although their identities were being withheld pending notification of their families.

A second passenger in the Dodge, a 19-year-old man, was taken in critical condition to Silver Cross, according to state police.

“We’ve had several cars in ditches and multiple accidents today,” Angus said Saturday.

Road conditions were sleek and slippery at the time of the crash.

Mark Trost, the driver of the truck, said he and his wife, Kris, were not injured in the crash.

“They came out of the corner and got squirelly sideways and came right into my truck,” Trost said. “It’s a shame.”

State police, the Manhattan and New Lenox fire districts, Manhattan police and Manhattan emergency services responded to the scene. The intersection of Cedar Road and U.S. 52 is at an S-curve south of Manhattan and north of Wilton Center.
