A South Holland man was killed in a crash on Interstate 80/94 in northwest Indiana early Monday, police said.
Police found David Pettiford, 33, trapped in his 2011 Toyota Camry in the right center lane of the westbound expressway at the 12 mile marker expressway under the Interstate 65 overpass about 1 a.m., according to a statement from Indiana State Police.
No one witnessed the crash, but due to the extent of damage to the car, police think Pettiford had driven his car into the rear of a moving semi, state police said.
He was taken to North Lake Methodist Hospital in Gary, where he later died, police said.
Police checked at truck stops in the area for semis that showed signs of damage from a possible crash but found none, according to Ann Wojas, a state police spokeswoman.
Police said that Pettiford was speeding, and that alcohol was a factor in the crash.
The two right westbound lanes of the expressway had reopened about 4:30 a.m.
