The Mokena Village Board this week approved a 144-unit building that will offer a variety of housing for senior citizens.
Ryan Cos. plans to begin construction in May on an 11.4-acre site at 21536 Wolf Road.
Alan Zordan, the village’s community development director, said the village has “for years been looking for a high-quality senior housing facility.”
Zordan said the three-story building will have 48 independent-living apartments with either one or two bedrooms and a private kitchen, 56 assisted-living apartments that will be either studios or one or two bedrooms with a limited kitchen and 40 memory-care units.
A recreational trail is planned along the frontage of the property on Wolf Road, and another will run along Wolf to Marilyn Way and allow access to shops and restaurants along U.S. 30.
Mayor Frank Fleischer said he has heard from residents who said they’re “looking forward” to the senior building opening.
“It’s going to be interesting to see how long it’s going to take to fill that up,” Fleischer said. “I don’t think it’s going to take that long. A lot of people are looking for senior housing in the community. I think it’s going to be a nice fit.”
Zordan said Ryan Cos. plans to open the building by mid-2015.
