A man and a teenager were shot Tuesday night in Dolton, about a block away from a basketball game at Thornridge High School, police said.
A group of five or six people were walking along 152nd Street near Champlain Street about 6:30 p.m. when someone got out of a black minivan or sport utility vehicle and shot at them, Police Chief John Franklin said.
He said the group scattered and ran to Thornridge, including the two who were wounded, and notified security guards who called 911.
A 17-year-old boy was shot in the side and abdomen, and a 20-year-old man was shot in the buttocks, police said. They said both initially were taken to Franciscan St. Margaret Health in Hammond, and the teen was transferred to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn where he was listed in critical condition.
Thornridge Principal James Walton said the shootings did not have anything to do with the school, 15000 Cottage Grove Ave., or the varsity game with Thornwood, which was held as scheduled. He described the shootings as a “community incident.”
Police said neither of those shot were Thornridge students. Police could not say Tuesday night where the group was headed when the shots were fired.
Police did not provide a description of the shooter and are asking anyone with information on the attack to call them at (708) 841-2533.
