Concerns about flooding from melting snow and rain forecast for later this week have Oak Lawn officials warning residents to take precautions.
On its website and Facebook page, the village cautions that the National Weather Service is forecasting rain followed by rising temperatures on Feb. 20.
“Because of the extensive snowfall on the ground, a rapid thaw may create conditions for flooding,” the warning said.
Residents are asked to make sure their sump pumps are plugged in and operational, to clear snow and debris from storm drains in front of their homes, and to check the exteriors of their homes for large collections of ice or snow that may fall from roofs or gutters and injure someone or damage property.
Residents also are asked to check on elderly or disabled neighbors or family members, and are reminded to avoid driving through standing water if possible.
