Police: Foul play not suspected in infant’s death

Updated: April 6, 2014 6:27AM

The state child welfare agency is investigating a baby sitter in the death Monday of a 4-month-old girl in Chicago Heights.

Paramedics and police responded about 4 p.m. to a call of an unresponsive baby at a home in the 1100 block of Division Street, according to Chicago Heights police.

They said Morgan Joseph was not breathing and was taken to Franciscan St. James Hospital in Chicago Heights, where she was dead on arrival.

The infant, who lived in the 100 block of Doris Lane in Chicago Heights, was pronounced dead at 4:46 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. It said an autopsy Tuesday was inconclusive, with results pending further studies.

Police said the baby “was in the care of the residents” of the Division Street home at the time of her death, and “there are no indications of any kind of abuse or foul play.”

However, the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services is investigating the girl’s baby sitter for possible neglect, spokeswoman Veronica Resa said, adding that DCFS has not had prior contact with the sitter.
