Homeless man dies from cold in Burbank

Updated: April 21, 2014 7:07PM

A homeless man found dead Monday in a wooded area in Burbank is at least the 28th cold-related death of the season in Cook County.

The body of James Nanfeldt, 61, was found near 75th Street and Narragansett Avenue about 5:30 p.m., according to Burbank police.

An autopsy Tuesday found that Nanfeldt died of hypothermia due to cold exposure, with heart disease and an enlarged heart as contributing factors, the medical examiner’s office said.

His death was ruled an accident.

Nanfeldt had no children and was not married, police said.

The last time Cook County saw more than 25 cold deaths was the winter of 2007-08, when 29 people died of cold-related causes, officials said. Last winter, 14 people died of cold-related causes.
