A 15-year-old boy fell more than 20 feet down a ventilation shaft outside a library in Flossmoor on Friday afternoon.

The boy was standing on top of a ventilation grate outside the Flossmoor Public Library, 1000 Sterling Ave., shortly after 5 p.m., Flossmoor Fire Department Capt. Matt Berk said. He was waiting for a ride with a group of friends when the grate gave way and he fell 20 to 25 feet down the vent shaft.

The grate covered a concrete shaft used to release steam and hot air from the library’s ventilation system, Berk said.

It took fire crews about 40 minutes to lift the boy out of the shaft using rope systems rigged to ladder trucks, Berk said.

The boy was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was listed in “stable” condition, Berk said.

No one else fell into the shaft, Berk said.

It was not immediately clear why the grate collapsed.
