Report ranks seven Southland towns among 50 safest in state

Updated: May 7, 2014 6:17AM

Seven Southland communities made a recent list of the top 50 safest cities or villages in Illinois.

SafeWise last week released its Top 50 safest Illinois towns, using the most recent FBI crime reports and analyzing the number of violent crimes such as aggravated assault, forcible rape, robbery and murder, as well as property crimes including arson, burglary and motor vehicle theft. The group then calculated the chance of these crimes happening per every 1,000 citizens to adjust for the different populations in each city.

Communities had to have a population of more than 5,000 as of 2012 in order to be judged, according to SafeWise.

According to the report, Willow Springs is the safest of the Southland towns, coming in at No. 20. SafeWise noted that there were only four violent crimes reported in 2012 in Willow Springs and called the village “tranquil.”

At No. 21 was Homer Glen, which SafeWise noted that even though the town keeps artificial lighting to a minimum, the city streets are “still safe after sundown.” On the most recent FBI crime report, Homer Glen had no reported rapes, murders or arson, according to SafeWise.

“Homer Glen is a wonderful community in which to safely live, raise children and do business,” Mayor Jim Daley said in a statement.

Palos Hills was named the 25th-safest city in Illinois, with SafeWise citing its officers’ commitment to working in schools as part of the Gang Resistance Education and Training program as well as assistance for the elderly. No rapes or murders were reported in the FBI’s most recent statistics.

Manhattan was named 28th-safest with five violent crimes reported in 2012.

Citing its strong religious history and six violent crimes in 2012, SafeWise named Palos Heights as the 34th-safest Illinois city.

Frankfort was named No. 41 as SafeWise noted that there were no murder, rape or arson reports in 2012. SafeWise said that Frankfort “knows how to appreciate and preserve the past,” and visitors can feel safe at its many year-round community events.

Worth rounds out the list of Southland communities at No. 47 with five violent crimes reported in the FBI’s most recent statistics. In its report, SafeWise highlighted the village’s National Night Out program, which promotes a partnership between the community and police department.
