After getting more than 400 suggestions, Governors State University has narrowed its choices for an official mascot down to four: the Bengals, the Prairie Wolves, the Jaguars and the Gladiators, according to a news release from the school in University Park.
GSU is seeking input from current and prospective students, faculty, staff, alumni and community to make the final choice.
The mascot will be the university’s first, the release said, as it expands by welcoming its first freshman class, adding its first student residence (coming this July) and expanding its recreational sports while also establishing intercollegiate athletic teams for the first time.
A decision on the final choice for the mascot will be made using a combination of community and university input. Community members can vote starting Monday and through midnight April 14 by visiting www.govst.edu/mascotmatchup. The web page will features the four groups of designs, one for each mascot, the release said. Voters will vote for one group in its entirety, not just one image.
Participants can vote as many times as they want, the release said.
“We are now getting into the stretch run for our mascot choice,” dean of students and associate vice president of academic affairs Aurelio Valente said in the release. “We have had tremendous input from the broad and diverse community GSU serves. This is an exciting time in the school’s history and we’re eager to see what the final choice will be.”
Voters also are encouraged to attend the Mascot Match-up 3-on-3 basketball tournament at 3 p.m. Thursday in the Recreation and Fitness Center Gymnasium. Four basketball teams, each representing a mascot choice, will battle it out for supremacy. The event also will serve as the unveiling of GSU’s renovated facilities, the release said.
The official announcement of the university mascot is scheduled for noon May 6 in the Hall of Governors. Prizes will go to those who submitted the four finalists, and new mascot swag will be given to those in attendance, the release said.
GSU is at 1 University Parkway in University Park.
