Sheryl Sandberg, the Facebook chief operating officer known for her book “Lean In,” which advises women to take responsibility for boosting their careers, will be the May 3 commencement speaker for City Colleges of Chicago.
Sandberg, who is touting a new edition of her book for graduating students, will offer advice to the City Colleges grads on how to leverage their hard-won skills and knowledge to succeed, City Colleges said in a news release.
Sandberg’s best-selling 2013 book, “Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead,” caused a sensation because she said women should stop making excuses and being cowed by workplace gender bias that favors men. Instead, women should believe in themselves and their ability to achieve work-life balance, and go for the big assignments, she said.
Sandberg, a graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Business School, will meet with a group of City Colleges graduates prior to the ceremony to learn how they’ve overcome personal challenges and “leaned in” to accomplish their goals, according to the news release.
The ceremony for students who have earned associate’s degrees will take place at 1 p.m. May 3 at the University of Illinois at Chicago Pavilion, 525 S. Racine Ave.
