The head coach of the girls varsity basketball team at Hillcrest High School in Country Club Hills has been charged with drunken driving in Frankfort, according to Frankfort police.

John Maniatis, 46, of the 400 block of Pleasant Hill Road in Frankfort, was arrested about 12:45 am. April 4 near U.S. 30 and 93rd Avenue and charged with DUI, improper lane use and making an improper turn at an intersection, police said.

Maniatis also is a social studies teacher at Hillcrest High School and has worked for nearly 20 years at the school, 17401 Pulaski Road, Bremen High School District 228 Supt. Bill Kendall said.

Deputy Police Chief Kevin Keegan said a patrol officer stopped Maniatis’ vehicle after observing it driving erratically and going only 20 mph in a 40 mph zone.

During the stop, Maniatis told the officer he had stopped at a bar after leaving an after-school basketball program in Country Club Hills, and he failed field sobriety tests, Keegan said.

As of Monday, District 228 had not taken disciplinary action against Maniatis, Kendall said.

“We’re going to do our investigation and determine our course of action from there,” he said. “We just found out about this (Monday).”

Neither Maniatis nor Hillcrest’s principal could be reached for comment Monday.

Maniatis is scheduled to be inducted into the IHSA Girls Basketball Hall of Fame in a ceremony this month at Illinois State University, according to Sun-Times Media reports.

Keegan said Maniatis posted bond and is next scheduled to appear May 1 at the Will County courthouse in Joliet.
