Feuding couple leave young son home alone

Updated: May 19, 2014 12:48PM

A feuding Oak Forest couple left their 5-year-old home alone when each fled their apartment Saturday night after an argument, which they concluded hours later by causing a scene at a local bar, according to Oak Forest police.

The incident has been reported to the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, police said.

Officers were sent to Oliver’s Bar & Grill, 6150 W. 159th St., Saturday night after a man at the bar was complaining loudly that his girlfriend was inside drinking and nobody was watching his child, police said.

The father told police that the couple were drinking at their apartment in the 15800 block of Aspen Court, got into an argument and he left, driving to Markham to calm down. An hour later, he tried calling the woman at home, but his calls went to voice mail, police said.

Instead of going to check on his son, police said, the man went to Oliver’s, where he found his girlfriend and confronted her, causing a scene and being removed by security personnel.

Staff told police that the woman, the boy’s mother, had been drinking at the bar for about two hours by the time police arrived about midnight.

The boy was sleeping in bed when police went to the apartment and arranged for a relative to take the child, according to police.

The woman told police that her boyfriend was home when she left the apartment.

Police said no charges were filed because they were unable to determine who left the child alone.
