The president of Ireland will visit Gaelic Park next month and will attend Mass there on Mother’s Day, according to a news release from Gaelic Park.

It will be the first visit by President Michael D. Higgins to the Irish cultural and athletic center, 6119 W. 147th St., Oak Forest.

Higgins and his wife, Sabina, will attend the Mass at 10 a.m. May 11 in the center’s Emerald Room. After Mass, an Irish breakfast will be served.

The public is invited. Admission is $8, and attendees will be required to be seated by 9:30 a.m. For reservations, call (708) 687-9323.

Higgins was born in Limerick, raised in County Clare and was the first in his family to access third-level education, studying at University College Galway, the University of Manchester and Indiana University, the release said.

It said that as a lecturer in political science and sociology at National University of Ireland, Galway, and in the United States, Higgins was a passionate proponent for the extension of access to third-level education beyond the walls of established universities.

Higgins has served as a public representative in Ireland for many years, spent 25 years in Dail Eireann (the lower house of the Parliament) and headed the Labour Party from 2003 until his election in 2011 as the ninth president of Ireland.
