Commuters and Flossmoor residents who have been waiting for improvements at the train station on the Metra Electric District line in the village will find that one step closer to reality come Monday.
A groundbreaking ceremony is set for 3 p.m. at the station, which is in line for a $4 million renovation centered on the platform used by commuters heading to and from downtown Chicago and points beyond.
The station is on Sterling Avenue, south of Flossmoor Road.
Station improvements have been on the radar of Flossmoor officials for at least five years. The platform is crumbling from years of weather and use.
Metra executive director/CEO Don Orseno and Metra Board member Don De Graff will be joined by Flossmoor Mayor Paul Braun for the ceremony, Metra spokesman Michael Gillis said Friday.
“We’re going to rehab what’s there now. We’re going to rebuild the platform,” Gillis said.
Village officials were not available for comment Friday.
