Retailer seeks  Tinley Park tax deal

Updated: June 8, 2014 6:33AM

Tinley Park trustees on Tuesday night gave preliminary approval for a sales tax agreement with The Great Escape, which plans to build a new store in the village.

The company — which sells pools, spas, patio furniture and outdoor accessories — would keep its current store in Tinley Park, and plans a 47,000-square-foot superstore at 17200 LaGrange Road, south of CVS Pharmacy and American Chartered Bank.

Under the proposed agreement, The Great Escape would receive up to $250,000 over a maximum of 10 years, but the amount isn’t guaranteed. The agreement may get final approval of the village board later this month.

The store would not share in any revenue generated by the village’s 0.75 percent local sales tax that will kick in July 1, according to the agreement.

In a letter seeking the sales tax deal, company president N. Barry Poll said the project would cost $5 million, and the store is projected to have sales of $5.5 million in its first year.

The Great Escape recently opened a new store at 15852 LaGrange Road, in Lake View Plaza in Orland Park, but Poll says in the letter that the company has a short-term lease there and sees the Tinley Park site as a way “to develop a long-term solution.”

The company has 24 stores, including 16 in the Chicago area as well as locations in Indiana, Iowa and Ohio.
