New Lenox officials honor Providence hockey team

The New Lenox Village Board honored the Providence Catholic Celtics Varsity Hockey team for earning the Kennedy Cup this seaso.

The team earned the school’s first Catholic Hockey League Kennedy Cup, sweeping a best-of-3 final over Benet.

“Their overall varsity record was an unbelievable 63-6-4,” said Mayor Tim Baldermann at a meeting Monday.

The team won three consecutive best-of-three series, which was six wins total against three different opponents, the mayor said.

“I think our biggest accomplishment is that we went 102 days without a loss,” said Coach Nick Iaciancio.

The team’s season spanned 11 months, starting in June 2013, the coach said.

Despite the long season, the players also focused on academics. All of the players who are graduating are planning to go to college, he said.

“There were times it was hard to believe it was a high school team playing,” said Trustee David Butterfield.

The members of the varsity team include Michael Bonaguro, Ben Brandau, Jake Dillma, Jack Dunne, John Duzansky, Jordan Ernst, Pat Francis, Matt Francis, Andy Guth, Matt Iaciancio, Ryan Iaciancio, Vince Kesic, Eric Mounce, Pat O’Sullivan, Jake Payton, Matt Payton, Dan Ricker, Justin Salazar, Mike Vennetti andRick Yusa.

The assistant coaches are John McDonnell, Kevin Oliver and Dave Rogers. The team student managers are Jack Pell and Leah Schultz.
