Authorities are describing the slaying of an elderly Crete Township man who was found dead in his home Wednesday evening as a “robbery that went terribly wrong.”

Alfred Hilton, 85, was found beaten to death at his house in the 3200 block of East Bemes Road in an unincorporated area, Will County sheriff’s police said. They said officers responded about 6:30 p.m. after a concerned friend went to check on Hilton and found his body and the house ransacked.

Hilton lived alone, and friends became concerned when he did not show up for a church function earlier Wednesday.

“The motive for this homicide appears to be a robbery that went terribly wrong,” sheriff’s police spokesman Ken Kaupas said in a news release. “Several items were obviously missing from the house.”

No arrests had been made as of Friday night, police said.

Police are asking anyone with information to contact them at (815) 727-8574 or leave an anonymous tip via the website, www.willcosheriff.org.
