Another Oak Lawn business is offering video gambling.
Two machines were installed last week at the Oak Lawn Family Restaurant, 5769 W. 95th St., said Pete Klementzos, who owns the restaurant with his brother, Tom.
The Illinois Gaming Board website reports that Oak Lawn now has 124 video gambling machines at 28 locations, mostly bars and restaurants.
Unlike some places, the two machines at Oak Lawn Family (less than the maximum of five permitted) are unobtrusive, tucked into a small area between the dining room and restrooms. That’s exactly what the owners wanted.
“We didn’t want to put them in the main dining room or by the entrance. We didn’t want them to become the focus point of the restaurant. This is still a family restaurant first,” Pete Klementzos said.
Each machine offers a variety of games. During a lunch hour last week, a few people tested their luck. Even Pete Klementzos gave it a try, laughing at his winnings, a grand total of four cents.
An ATM near the games allows people to insert their receipt for prompt payment.
The restaurant was eligible to offer video gambling after the village board in January approved a liquor license for it, allowing it to serve beer and wine only. Businesses must have a license to pour alcoholic beverages to qualify for the gambling machines.
Pete Klementzos said customers have been asking about beer and wine for years.
“We’ve never had this available before and think it will be a good addition,” he said of video gambling.
