A few tears were shed as the New Lenox School District 122 board honored eight 2014 retirees Wednesday.
Business manager Harold Huang is among those retiring. Before the meeting, media coordinator Jennifer Zimmerman asked each retiree to write a fun story about their careers.
“(Teacher retiree Char) Osborne must have inadvertently not shared a funny story from her teaching career with us, so we asked for help,” Zimmerman joked. “One time, in PE, oh, never mind, we won’t tell that story.”
Going through the list of retirees, she mentioned each with a quip. At the end, Zimmerman introduced Huang. Based on the attendees’ reactions, he will be missed. He was always the first responder on the scene for each bus fender bender, Zimmerman said.
“When Harold began his career in New Lenox in 2006, the district had just failed to pass the O&M fund referendum for the fifth time,” Zimmerman said. “Harold is proud to say that in the last eight years, all of us have worked together to cut costs (thank you state of Illinois), improved our learning facilities, created an environment where our teachers and staff are appreciated and provided a place where our students are safe and can achieve.”
Teacher union president Katie Kohlross made a special presentation to Huang, laughing and wishing him well.
The other retirees included Renee King, Kay Purnell, DeDe Brenczewski, Pat Martin, Donnah Simmons and Sue Powers.
